7. We also provided an adviser on wildlife management to the

Department of National Parks in Zimbabwe (until April 1988). Under

Heads of Mission Small Projects Schemes we have provided around £5000 to

the Chirundu Conservation Education Camp in the Zambezi Valley for a

kitchen and dining room block and binoculars. We are in the process of

providing a solar water pump to the camp at a cost of about £2,400.

and it aims to develop a concerned conservation and environmental

awareness.

8. Under the Joint Funding Scheme in Zimbabwe we have agreed to

co-fund the Zambezi Action Plan (£89,372 over 3 years). This aims to

foster an interest in, and an appreciation of, the environment among

rural schoolchildren so as to promote the conservation and sustainable

utilisation of natural resources. As part of this, an action magazine

will be produced for schoolchildren and their teachers. It will focus

on environmental issues including wildlife conservation.

We are also considering three other projects in Zimbabwe:

Communal Wildlife Management Project, Nyaminyami

i.

(£567,900 over 5 years).

ii.

Wildlife Community Development Programme (£121,057 over

3 years).

iii. Communal Area Wildlife Management Programme, Dande District

(£500,000 over 5 years).

These are all concerned with promoting community awareness of the

benefits of natural resources, and with improving wildlife management.

They should improve the habitat of big game in each area.
