WHY ARE SEIZURES OF ILLEGALLY IMPORTED BY-PRODUCTS OF ENDANGERED

SPECIES PUT UP FOR SALE BY AUCTION?

Auctions are conducted in accordance with CITES guidelines and

with the endorsement of Hong Kong's Endangered Species Advisory

Committee (ESAC), a statutory body which advises the Hong Kong

Government on all endangered species protection matters. Successful

tenderers must obtain appropriate possession licences, or

registration in the case of ivory tusks, before they may take

possession of the goods.

HOW ARE ITEMS OTHER THAN LIVE ANIMALS DISPOSED OF?

A

Disposal is always conducted in accordance with CITES guidelines

and on the advice of the Hong Kong Endangered Species Advisory

Committee.

Perishable items such as meat or carcasses are normally destroyed

by incineration; stuffed or preserved specimens are offered to

educational institutes, museums and CITES authorities for education and training purposes; parts and derivations of animals listed in CITES Appendix II (i.e. the less endangered species) may be offered

for sale after consulting the Endangered Species Advisory Committee.
