Trade in endangered species, including their readily recognisable
parts and derivatives, subject to strict licensing control under
Hong Kong's Animals and Plants (Protection of Endangered Species)
Ordinance.
Schedules listing endangered species updated in August 1988 keep
them in line with current CITES appendices. New legislation to
control the trade in medicines containing rhinoceros ingredients
submitted to Legislative Council on 31 May 1989.

IS ENOUGH BEING DONE TO ENFORCE LEGISLATION IN HONG KONG?
Any
Customs officers screen and spot- check incoming shipments.
shipment suspected of containing endangered species is referred to
the Agriculture and Fisheries Department for checking, investigation
and prosecution as necessary.
Regular checks also carried out by officials of Agriculture and
Fisheries Department on local shops, markets and restaurants.
Number of staff being deployed by Agriculture and Fisheries
Department to enforce controls on trade in endangered species.

WHAT IS BEING DONE IN HONG KONG TO INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF
THIS PROBLEM?
Various public education measures are being taken, regular press releases and radio/television broadcasts.

New poster on conservation of endangered species has been
produced for display at customs check points, and other public
places.
