Ivory Trade: Line to Take

HKG has announced its support for the proposed ban on trade in new ivory.

Has suspended the issue of licences to imports/ivory from all sources pending a decision to be taken by CITES at the conference of all member countries October.
HKG is fully committed to the conservation of endangered species.

Has always complied fully with its obligations under CITES with regard to endangered species. This includes strict control on ivory.
Has enhanced existing strict controls by registering and marking all ivory acquired before 1986. (All ivory acquired after January 1986 has already been registered and marked.)
Urgent action is being taken to set up a computer data base of all registered ivory.
Has set up a special Task Force to investigate and suppress any illegal ivory trade through Hong Kong.
Existing legislation conforms fully with CITES requirements. Loopholes on import of work ivory plugged in August 1988. Since then, imports from certain sources - notably UAE have stopped. ΝΟ evidence of significant smuggling of ivory into Hong Kong.

AKG supports the continuing trade in ivory legally acquired and held before the proposed ban comes into effect,
Maximum fines for violating the legislation on endangered species protection are shortly to be increased five-fold.
HK will participate fully at the CITES African Elephant Working Group meeting in July and the CITES Conference in October.
