IMPORTATION OF A KILLER WHALE INTO HONG KONG

jkun

Jen

I have considered the papers forwarded by you on 14 December 1989, subsequently had an opportunity to discuss the matter on the telephone.

and we

The decisions to issue a CITES permit for the importation of a killer whale from Japan must be one which rests solely with the appropriate Hong Kong authorities.

I am not in a position to comment оп the statement made by the Production and Development Director of the Ocean Park Corporation that previously the United Kingdom CITES authority had issued a permit to allow the export of a similar animal from the UK to Hong Kong. However, I must say that given that Japan continues whaling operations on what can only realistically be described as a commercial basis, I would have reservations as to under what conditions the killer whale which it is now intended to export, had been obtained.

We would not wish therefore to amend our previous advice on this matter.
