5) The Hong Kong Covernment has been adopting a co-operative

attitude with other party countries in conserving the African elephant population. To response to a call from CITY

Hong Kong has banned the importation of ivory from Burundi which was not registered with the CITES Secretariat by December 1, 1966 because that country had silowed the impostation of illegal ivory. In April this year, Hong Kong Government also announced

a ban on ivory imports into Hong Kong directly or indirectly from Somalia, as from May 23. Considerations are being actively

given to extending the ban to cover other countries which are

known to be involved in the illegal ivory activities.
