(iii) Manufacturers in the electronics industry
seemed more willing to invest in machinery
and equipment in the third quarter, supported by continued demand for their
products. This was particularly so for
manufacturers of cordless telephones, computer components and printed circuit
boards.
(iv)
(v)
Investment interest in the plastics industry was apparently sustained. For example, sales by the largest local supplier of plastic injection moulding machines showed a significant increase in
the third quarter over the same quarter
last year.
It is interesting to note that
most of the machines sold were likely to
be installed in China.
As regards the metal products industry, two large suppliers of machine tools reported some increase in sales in the third quarter of 1989 over the third
quarter of 1988. Thus investment activity
was maintained by some of the
manufacturers.
