Completions of industrial premises fell by 21% in terms of floor area in the third quarter of 1989 (Table 4). Comparing the first three quarters of 1989 with the same period last year, completions
decreased by 27%.

Completions of office premises in the private sector decreased by 6% in terms of floor area in the third quarter of 1989. In the first three quarters of 1989, completions were 35% less than in the same period last year.

As regards other commercial premises (mainly shops) in the private sector, completions declined by 45% in terms of floor area in the third quarter of 1989. In the first three quarters of 1989, completions were 49% less than in the same
period last year.

Completions of private sector residential property decreased by 51% in terms of number of units in the third quarter of 1989. In the first three quarters of 1989, completions decreased by 27% from the same period last year.

(d) Building consents
Following a decline of 7% in the first half of 1989, planned property developments, in terms of the total usable floor area on building plans for which consent to commence work was given, fell by 36% in the third quarter (Table 5). Consents for residential, industrial, and other types of property (such as hotels, cinemas and school buildings) declined by 56%, 16% and 27% respectively in the third quarter of this year, while consents for commerical property rose by 2%.
