Tai Po Industrial Estate and 37% of the land in

the Yuen Long Industrial Estate was either

occupied or committed.

Feedback from Industry Department

28.

Some qualitative information on recent

trends in capital investment in the manufacturing industries was obtained by the Industry Department during regular factory

visits and from contacts with manufacturers.

The information, which is largely specific in nature and probably subjective, is summarised

below :

(i)

In view of sluggish overseas demand and, more recently, the increased uncertainties caused by the events in China, many local manufacturers were more cautious in making large-scale

investment in the second quarter.

Manufacturers in the plastics,

electronics and metal products industries appear to have been less affected than others by the events in

China, in terms of their investment

decisions.

(ii)

Manufacturers in the electronics industry continued to be willing to invest in machinery and equipment in order to enhance productivity and to improve quality, especially in producing electronic parts and

components.
