the next major live exercise, EX PURPLE VICTORY 91, which is

scheduled to be held in Jordan in May 1991.

b. FPDA. The UK will be playing a significant part in

FPDA exercises in 1990. In March an RAF deployment of

TORNADO and AAR aircraft, and of a radar detachment, will be

joined by an RN ship from ARMILLA to provide the major

contribution to the first IADS air defence exercise of the

year. Later in the year HQ 5 AB Bde assisted by JFOS will

plan and run the annual FPDA CPX, which is to be held in

Malaysia.

Developments in Command and Control for 00A Operations and

Exercises. A major development this year has been in the

finalising and agreeing of Directives to the various agencies and individuals earmarked for 00A operations. A pilot course for

augmentees for the JFHQ was trialled and run successfully by the Joint Warfare Staff and regular courses will now take place from

the beginning of 1990 so that officers earmarked in the JFHQ 'shopping list' will receive the required pre-appointment training.

a clear reminder of the value of over-the-horizon naval forces.
