70. UNFICYP. The UK has maintained its contribution to UNFICYP

on a six-month roulement basis by the deployment of the Cyprus Emergency Reinforcement Regiment (CERR) from BAOR, and an armoured scout car squadron and a transport squadron from UKLF.

British servicemen also serve on the staff of HQUNFICYP.

71. MFO Sinai. The UK has continued to provide a contingent to

serve on the Headquarters staff of MFO Sinai.

UNTAG Namibia. UNTAG Namibia is a monitoring and

assistance group comprising 9,000 personnel from over 24 countries. 7,500 of these are military. The task is to assist and monitor the peaceful transition, with the withdrawal of

South Africa from the territory, to free elections and

independence within the spirit of United Nations Security

Resolution 435. Elements of UNTAG were initially deployed to

Namibia on 1 April with a withdrawal date scheduled for 1 April

1990. The UK's contribution is a Force Signal Unit, initially

171 strong, which is being reduced as tasks in the transition process are successfully completed
