MILITARY ASSISTANCE AND TRAINING

Our Military Assistance programme has continued to
accomplish vital aims in support of the Government's defence and
foreign policies, and as a crucial adjunct to Defence Sales. In
its 3 main forms loan service personnel, short term training and advisory teams, and foreign and Commonwealth training in the
UK its volume and variety are largely unchanged, constituting a
wide projection of influence out of all proportion to its cost,
and promoting a climate for successful sales. A summary of
military assistance activities is shown on the chart at Annex D.
46. A total of ..... loan service personnel form teams in 33
countries worldwide, together with a further
RAF personnel
on secondment to Saudi Arabia. Short-term training teams of all
kinds are despatched worldwide to answer a variety of calls for
British expertise. During 1989 a total of
short-term teams in
personnel formed
countries; a recent and notable
development has been the export of staff training to Uganda,
Botswana and Zimbabwe. Despite the perceived high cost of UK-
based training, some 5,000 overseas students attended UK military
courses in 1988/89, amounting to some 45,000 student/weeks.
This represents a slight overall increase over last year, but
maintains the decline in non-NATO training which has become characteristic of the past few years.
