PR Duffell CBE MC

Major General Peter Duffell was commissioned into 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles in 1960. He spent the next ten years at regimental duty with the First Battalion of his regiment, mainly on internal security duties and active service in South East Asia. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1966 as a company commander in the Borneo Campaign.

The General attended the Army Staff College in 1971 after which his first staff appointment was as Brigade Major in 5 Infantry Brigade then based in Northern Ireland. Following a further tour in South East Asia, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1976 and appointed Military Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief United Kingdom Land Forces.

After commanding the First Battalion of his Regiment in Hong Kong, United Kingdom and Belize the General was promoted Colonel and served in Military Operations in the Ministry of Defence with responsibility for the Army's operational policy in NATO. In 1984 he was appointed Commander of the Gurkha Field Force in Hong Kong in the rank of Brigadier. Chief of Staff, 1st British Corps in West Germany followed in 1986 and in 1988 he attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in London. After graduation he was attached to the Cabinet Office working with the Efficiency Unit. He was made an OBE in 1981 and promoted to CBE in 1988. Major General Duffell was appointed Commander British Forces Hong Kong and Major General Brigade of Gurkhas on 3 August 1989.

Peter and Ann Duffell have two children, Rachael and Charles, at school in Hong Kong.
