The Chairman closed discussion on the item by observing

that, insofar as the military was concerned, note should be

taken that there was no direct military interest in the

difficulties surrounding the Defence Estate issue, provided

that they did not prejudice CBF's ability to conduct his

task or impact on the various arrangements for the

withdrawal of the Garrison.

The Chairman introduced Item 3 which he said concerned

a future RN presence afloat in Hong Kong waters until 30 Jun

97. He observed that deliberations on the subject had commenced on a brisk note but that for a variety of reasons, subsequent progress had not been as speedy as the Committee

might have wished. He invited DN Plans to brief the meeting

on the current state of play.
