the threat in order to achieve timely warning. This study should be completed
by 1 Jul 91 in time to form a basis for the major review proposed in
paragraphs 42 and 43.
62. The COS are asked to note that the following studies have already been com-
missioned or refined as a result of this biennial review:
a.
Future RN Presence. A study, to be led by MOD Navy and completed by
mid 1989, to determine the type(s) and number of vessels which could
that a RN presence
would remain in Hong Kong waters until 30 Jun 97.
b.
Helicopter Study. A study, to be led by HQBFHK and completed by the
end of 1989, to review helicopter crew and aircraft establishments, to con-
firm the Scout minimum contingency force, and to assess whether additional
Wessex and Scout crews should be included in JTP 30, the Hong Kong
reinforcement plan.
C.
Underwater Roles and Support Capabilities Study. A study, to be
undertaken during 1989 by HQBFHK, in conjunction with the HKG, to resolve
how and when underwater roles and support capabilities
-
currently the
responsibility of the RN may be transferred to HKG agencies.
GARRISON TITLE
63. The COS are invited to endorse the recommendation that the term "Sovereign
Force Hong Kong" should be discarded and that the garrison should retain the
title "Hong Kong Garrison" until the final handover on 30 Jun 97.
