is to look for another to take over Mr. McLaren's portfolio on Asian so that he can be stationed permanently in Hong Kong. The other option is simply to appoint another person to be the Senior Representative of the British side.

It seems that the former option is more in the interests of Hong Kong, since Mr. McLaren was once the Political Adviser of the Hong Kong Government, and has A firm grasp of the background of the Sino-British negotiation. The best arrangement would, therefore, be for him to be stationed in Hong Kong to handle such affairs during the transition period.
