Mainland urges Taiwan to allow return visits Chinese news agency Zhongguo Xinwen She (in Chinese 1000 gmt 27 Sep 89) in a commentary entitled "If only people on either side of the straits were able to come and go like the tide" said that "contacts between the two sides are in a one- way pattern" and that while "countless Taiwan businessmen have come to the mainland ... no mainland businessman has ever gone to Taiwan for business purposes in an open capacity". The commentary also complained that mainland sports teams are not allowed to attend events on the island. The agency said it was "unreasonable” of Taiwan not to allow return visits.

After the meeting, (?Barter) and his Chinese counterpart Yang Taifang signed an agreement on posts and telecommunications co-operation between China and Mongolia. Chinese Foreign Minister discusses Hongkong declaration

British Foreign Secretary (Excerpts) Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen and his British counterpart John Major reaffirmed here today [New York, 29th September] that both countries will abide by their commitment as provided in their joint declaration on the future of Hongkong. The assurances were made by the two foreign ministers when they met the press separately at the end of their one-and-a-half hour talks held at the UN headquarters, where they are attending the 44th session of the UN General Assembly.

Describing their talks as "constructive," Qian said he and Mr Major agreed that the two countries will "strictly implement the Chinese-British joint declaration on Hongkong so as to ensure the stability and prosperity of Hongkong”. Major said he and Qian had "very useful and very frank exchange of views” on the question of Hongkong...

China reports meeting of Joint Liaison Group in London (Excerpts) The Sino-British Joint Liaison Group began three days of talks here today [London, 27th September] after a suspension of three months. The meeting, the 13th of its kind, was originally scheduled to take place in London in

July. But the session was unilaterally suspended by Bri after the quelling of the anti-government rebellion in Peking i early June. China had expressed its regret about Britain's decision... The Chinese delegation at the talks is led by ambassador Ke Zaishuo, China's senior representative, and the British team by Robin Mclaren, Britain's senior representative and Assistant Under Secretary of State at the Foreign Office.

After today's meeting which went on for about three-and- a-half hours, Ke told reporters that it was an important meeting since the group's work was suspended for a few months. He pointed out that during this period, many problems cropped up in the relations between the two countries and in the situation in Hongkong. The two delegations held a wide-ranging and frank discussion on these problems at the meeting this morning, he added. Chinese leaders receive Y.K. Pao (Text) Chinese Premier Li Peng discussed the economic situation in Hongkong and China's mainland with noted Hongkong figure [Sir] Yue-Kong Pao here today [Peking; 29th September] in the state guesthouse. The discussion was followed by a luncheon hosted by Li in honour of the Honkong guest. Prior to the discussion, Ji Pengfei, director of the Hongkong and Macao Affairs Office under the State Council, had a talk with Pao on matters related to the committee for drafting the Basic Law for the Hongkong administrative region.
