In the light of Mr Peppard's letter, however, we have asked the Hong Kong authorities whether they have detected any reduction of support in Hong Kong for the death penalty following recent developments in China. Their advice is that there is no evidence of any significant change in public opinion on this issue: the matter is however kept under careful review.
