The hiring charge for each ferry is $12,000 per day, and up to 5 ferries are being used. Two landing pontoons at $2,500 per pontoon per day are also required to ensure access to the land-based administration area at all states of the tide. A sum of HKD2.28 million had originally been reserved from the UK donation. As it is expected that the cost for reimbursement of work by the garrison would exceed the estimated cost of HKD4.8 million (to be committed to UK donation), the HKD2.28 million referred above will probably be used to pay for work undertaken by the garrison.
It has always been our intention to decommission the ferries as soon as possible, but the large influx and the shortage of accommodation have made this impossible. We now expect to be able to decommission the ferries by the end October when High Island becomes available. The cost for hire of ferries and pontoons for September and October is estimated at $3,975,000 (say HKD4.0 million or PDS0.33 million). The balance of HKD3.22 million (or PDS0.268) is to cover the cost of an additional 50 days which may be required before the end of the current financial year.
