DSR 11C (Revised 5/87) A further complication is that the sum to which we
are publicly committed is £4.5 million, not the £4.25
million agreed in your letter of 6 June. The Governor
used this figure in speaking to the press following his
meeting with the Prime Minister on 8 June. I have looked
into how this discrepancy arose. It seems clear that the
Governor was basing himself on a press statement produced
by No 10 containing the incorrect figure. The briefing
letter produced by the FCO for the meeting contained the
correct figure. Under the circumstances, and although my
Department was not responsible for the error, I propose
to make up the difference from the FCO's Unallocated
Provision.
