In his absence in New York, the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary has asked me to thank you for your letter of 3 August. He much appreciated your inviting him to lunch with the Trustees of the Croucher Foundation on 20 October.
Although he would very much have liked to come,
knows of the good work done by the Croucher Foundation and particularly values its role in promoting educational links between the UK and Hong Kong, he will unfortunately be in Kuala Lumpur for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from 16-25 October. Mr Francis Maude, the Minister of State responsible for Hong Kong, will also be out of London. But Robin McLaren, the Under Secretary of State, whose responsibilities include Hong Kong, would be delighted to join you for lunch with the Trustees, should you wish to invite him.
Yours sincholy, Ifwillige
