1. A letter from Lord Butterfield, inviting the Secretary of State

to attend a lunch on 20 October with the Trustees of the Croucher

Foundation.

Recommendation

2. I recommend that the Secretary of State reply to Lord

Butterfield in terms of the attached draft.

Background

A 3. Lord Butterfield has invited the Secretary of State to an

informal lunch with Trustees of the Croucher Foundation on

20 October. As the enclosure to his letter was missing, the

department has already been in touch with Lord Butterfield.

The Croucher Foundation is named after Mr Noel Croucher, one of

Hong Kong's most eminent financiers who died in 1980. A history of

the Croucher Foundation and a list of the Trustees are attached.

The value of the Trust is now estimated at some £70 million.

5. The main aims of the Trust are to provide scholarships for young Hong Kong Chinese of outstanding ability in the fields of science,

technology or medicine to undertake post-graduate study and research
