SECRETARY OF STATE'S DINNER WITH ACOST, 7 FEBRUARY

1.

The Secretary of State has accepted Sir Francis Tombs'

invitation to dine with him and four other members of the

Advisory Council on Science and Technology (ACOST) on 7 February (a copy of ACOST's terms of reference is attached). Their aim in inviting the Secretary of State is to gain a better understanding of foreign relations in various areas

in the field of Science and Technology.

2.

The occasion will be informal; the Secretary of State

is not expected to make a speech. However, in order to give

the conversation some structure, the ACOST Secretariat in the Cabinet Office have suggested the following outline for

discussion.

Following a brief introduction by Sir Francis Tombs on

ACOST, and why it has invited the Secretary of State, he

might invite the Secretary of State to comment generally on
