Vietnamese refugees

9. There are at present some 9,700 Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong awaiting resettlement. Britain and Hong Kong are concerned at the current situation; the arrival rate has increased while the resettlement rate has decreased. Britain announced in May 1987 a decision to accept a further 468 Vietnamese refugees for resettlement in the UK, and is using this initiative to urge other countries to do more to relieve Hong Kong of its refugee burden.

Resettlement alone is not the solution to this problem. Britain has been discussing with the main resettlement countries and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees the basis for a common international approach aimed at finding a durable solution to the Indo-Chinese refugee problem.
