MINISTER FOR TRADE'S MEETING WITH MARTIN BARROW, DEPUTY CHAIRMAN ASIA-PACIFIC REGIONAL BOARD JARDINE MATHESON HOLDINGS LTD, ON FRIDAY 8 SEPTEMBER AT 11.30am
Present
Lord Trefgarne
Mr Adams
Mr Styles
Summary
Mr Barrow
A discussion on the ways in which Britain could demonstrate commitment to Hong Kong. The Minister was particularly interested in the establishment of a British Building in the Colony.
Action
The Minister asked to meet Mr Meadway to discuss further the construction of a British Building in Hong Kong.
Detail
Mr Barrow said that the overall purpose to his visit was to encourage additional British support and commitment to Hong Kong in both the political and economic spheres. He believed that in maintaining and strengthening its presence in Hong Kong, Britain would gain wider strategic benefits. He had already met Mr Maude and had meetings with a number of MPs and Home Office officials. One of the most important forthcoming issues was the drafting of the Basic Law, about which a meeting was soon to be held. He would be attending in his position as member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LEGCO). He also sought support on various infrastructure projects, an education scheme and improved treatment of Hong Kong nationals at British Airports.
