FCO ORAL QUESTIONS, 25 OCTOBER: HONG KONG

1.

Mr Elliot Morley MP has put down a question for oral answer,

ask the Secretary of State when he next plans to visit Hong Kong;

and if he will make a statement. I submit a draft answer and

supplementaries.

to

2. Mr Morley, who entered Parliament in June 1987, has not tabled a

question for answer by an FCO Minister until now. His listed

interests include immigration and the environment.

3. It is widely known that the Secretary of State intends to visit

Hong Kong at "about the turn of the year". The suggested reply

makes clear that the visit will take place in the New Year, which is

the present plan.

4.

The supplementaries will undoubtedly need updating, particularly

those on Vietnamese boat people. There will also be a need to

update them following the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
