Background

Mr Eric Martlew MP asked a question on the Basic Law of Hong Kong on

8 March 1989. (Hansard extract attached)

It is widely known that the Secretary of State intends to visit Hong Kong as soon as possible. The present plan is that this will be in

January but it is not yet finalised.

A similar reply was given to Mr Elliot Morley MP by the then

Secretary of State in an answer to an oral question on 25 October,

except that "early in the New Year" was used.
