But it has been suggested that your visit has done more hars

than good and has only served to whip up anti-British sentiment

FORBIGE SECRETARY:

Not so again I think. I think I have had a very warı

response. Of course people look to Britain to achieve the

impossiblo. Ve cannot transform the history and the geography of

the world. What we can do is to go on working as seriously as I

have tried to do over the last 6 years to improve the prospect of

Hong Kong. Together we have done a great deal to achieve that and

what happened in Tianenman Square a month ago shattered all of us in

its impact on that. Jow we have to begin putting those propositions

together again on the foudation of the declaration we gut agreed

then.

But would you say the demonstrations which have taken place

while you were here and the protest which was made during your lunch

speech was ware response?

PORRIGE SECRETARY:

lo I think that any case that feels the need for support by

demonstration and methods of that kind is actually weakened by that

sort of advocacy.
