TRANSCRIPT OF PRESS CONFERENCE

GIVEN BY THE FOREIGN SECRETARY, SIR GEOFFREY HOVE,

IN HONG KONG,

ON TUESDAY, 4 JULY 1989

TRANSCRIPT A

HKB 026/20

FORRIGE SECRETARY:

May I begin by thanking the press corps for its patience as

There were one

we jostled our way with each other round Hong Kong.

or two occasions when the media was the message quite literally and

it was impossible for to establish contact with the people of

Hong Kong. But apart from that I think we got on very well together

and 1 appreciate your tolerance.

My latest visit here has in fact been of very great value,

When I arrived I said that I would listen as well as explain and

over the last 3 days I have managed to meet a vary wide range of

people.

My discussions with the Governor and his advisers have been,

ae you would expect, of particular importance. I have also talked

to many other people from different walks of life, including some of

those who have led demonstrations during my visit.
