State and Lady Howe attach great importance to a sensitive choice

of gifts which shows that thought has been given to what would

please the recipient. When making recommendations, you should

therefore bear in mind the intended recipient's interests,

hobbies etc. A number of alternative suggestions should be given

for each individual. We shall also need to know what minor gifts

are required for senior officials, Protocol Officers etc,

together with suggestions. Gifts will also be required for

drivers. These latter are usually pens. Please indicate number

required.

AIRPORT ARRIVAL

The Secretary of State and party will need to know in advance all

particulars of airport arrangements, ie names of greeting party,

any press statements, allocation of numbered cars etc.

BLOOD GROUPS

Secretary of State is AB Rhesus negative;

PRESS ENTERTAINMENT

A small supply of drink (say 3 whisky and 3 gin) should be placed

in the Head of News Department's suite for press entertainment.

Mixers can be bought from hotel.

20.

DUTY FREE

Members of the party may wish to purchase duty free ie whisky,

gin, cognac or cigarettes for their return to the UK.

Can you

supply this please. If so grateful if you would send me by fax a

small list of items together with prices (fax no is 210 6870).

Can duty free costs be deducted from subsistence. If not how do

you wish payment?

ADVANCE

We shall let you have details of the advance visit by the

Secretary of State's Special Branch Officer. Do you require the

Conference Officer in Hong Kong during this

assistance of a

visit?
