POST

1. We discussed earlier today the attached article by

David Whellen, which has appeared in the South China Morning Post of 9 February.

line.

If asked about this report, I suggest you take the following

No truth in suggestion that Governor has been summoned to see the Prime Minister. Natural that he should take opportunity of forthcoming visit to London to brief Prime Minister on current matters affecting Hong Kong.

Previous Governor regularly called on Prime Minister when visiting London. Sir D Wilson's call is part of the same pattern.

In view of the forthcoming Foreign Affairs Committee enquiry into Hong Kong, particularly appropriate that Sir D Wilson should see the Prime Minister at this point.

If asked, you could confirm that this will be the first time Sir D Wilson has called on the Prime Minister as Governor. His last call on her took place just before he took up his appointment.
