INTERVIEVER:
Are the conditions appalling?
LOKU GLEIARTHUR:
The conditions are improving,
The most notorious, iu a
sense, is San Iyic (phon). I visited that, saw it. It used to have
about 4,000 or more people in it. It is down now considerably to
about 2,000 or so. Liberalisation has taken place. People are able
to go out to work, they are able to go to school and I was very
pleased to see that. Of course it is not ideal by any manner of
means, many aspects of it are thoroughly unsatisfactory, but with
the huge influx that there has been the Hong Kong Government have
coped admirably.
INTERVIEVER:
How many are we going to take into Britain now?
LORD GLENARTHUR:
We have said that we will take in principle 1,000 people over
the next 2 to 3 years providing that others contribute
commensurately and we are now taking soundings of other governments. Ve mounted a powerful diplomatic campaign in order to ask for other
countries to cooperate and I am confident that they will respond.
