WESTERN SAMOA'S VISIT BY THE PRIME MINISTER TO CHINA

Although the Chinese appear not to have played up the visit by the Western Samoan Prime Minister to China for propaganda purposes, they have rewarded him for having decided to proceed with his official visit notwithstanding the events in Tiananmen Square in early June. Not only did they accord to him a higher level of attention than he might otherwise have received. But he also received a commitment of substantially increased funding for a Governmental complex in Apia. Tofilau will be well pleased with the result.

Tofilau and his party spent six days in China, three of them in Beijing, three of them in Guangdong Province. We understand that this was the first official visit by any leader to China since the events of June, with all the attendant ceremony, though not the first to be made. The Prime Minister of Thailand had earlier made a working
