In these recent weeks, you must have heard about the student movement for democracy ending in the tragic massacre in Tiananmen Square in Peking, China. Since your country is tens of thousand miles away from China, the pain of seeing or hearing those news may gradually vanish once China again becomes apparently more stable. However, to us people in Hong Kong, the situation is desperate and the memory of the terrible massacre on 4th June will never fade away. The Communist leaders in China have used machine guns and tanks to suppress its people who are seeking democracy by the most peaceful means. Deng Xiaoping, the paramount leader of China, has actually challenged openly the whole world on people's right to live. most tragic thing is that Deng appears to have won the support of the military by allowing them to have a bigger national budget and a more influential role in politics. Now, orders have been given to arrest intellectuals and students who had shown support to the democratic movement. This would effectively take China back to the pre-1950 age. Deng Xiaoping, Li Peng, Yang Xianquan and other hard-liners are preparing to sacrifice China's 1.1 billion people for their own self-interest. Chinese people all over the world are now trying to prevent this to happen.

During these days, people of Hong Kong seldom thought about their own fate in throwing their weight behind the democratic movement in China. All attention and energy have been devoted to participating in demonstrations, fund-raising, etc. to support the students in Peking. A lot of reporters and journalists from Hong Kong have been risking their lives in Peking and other parts of China to gather news of all the events from the beginning of the sit-in at Tiananmen Square until the massacre of the City. Because of the news blackout by the Chinese Authority. Hundreds of thousand of long distance calls, letters and fax documents have been sent to the various cities of China to inform the people what actually happened in their own country. We believe our efforts would benefit China in the long

run.

Hong Kong has been considered by many political commentators as the most important place to speed up the democratization of China because of the unique

one country, two system' agreement between the British Government and the Chinese Government. The extensive communication links with China and the rest of the world also keep Chinese people all over the world knows what actually happened to the people under the present Communist regime. However, the most valuable asset is its 5.5 million Chinese population most of whom have contacts with their relatives all over China.
