is a member of the Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee. He is a pro-democracy activist, who supported Chinese students in Tiananmen Square with food, money and posters. He was detained at Peking airport as he attempted to board a flight to Hong Kong on 5 June, but was finally released and returned safely to Hong Kong on 8 June. The Embassy in Peking made urgent representations to the Chinese authorities on his behalf and kept in touch with him during his detention.

The letter from the Hong Kong Students' Union has been overtaken by events. But we can use this opportunity to stress our readiness to do all we can to help other Hong Kong residents in similar circumstances. There have been two further cases of Hong Kong residents being arrested for pro-democracy activities in China: one, Mr Guo Wenxuan, has since been released; the other, Mr Yao Yongzhan, remains in detention in Shanghai.

We are continuing to press the Chinese over his case.
