BACKGROUND

a Hong Kong Chinese pro-democracy activist, was
detained by police at Peking airport on 5 June, after boarding a
plane chartered by the Hong Kong Government to evacuate Hong Kong
residents from Peking.

The Embassy made considerable efforts to trace Lee's whereabouts
including lodging an enquiry with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Embassy subsequently established that
was unharmed and free
left Peking on a
to travel. Peking have now confirmed that
flight for Hong Kong on the afternoon of 8 June.

's detention caused much concern in Hong Kong because he had
been very active in supporting Chinese students in Tiananmen Square
with food, money and posters and thus might have become a target for
reprisals. Fifteen members of the Legislative Council petitioned
the Governor about
s case on 7 June and asked that their
concerns be conveyed to the Prime Minister. No 10 have been kept
informed.
