Sweden

Prime Minister condemned violence on 7 June and said events were

deeply tragic. Chinese Ambassador summoned on 4 June.

Action:

Planned visit of Swedish Minister of Defence in August

cancelled. Also visit by Riksdag Standing Committee on Culture in

September.

Forthcoming visit of former President Li Xiannian cancelled.

USA

On 5 June President Bush condemned the events, deplored the decision

to use force and referred to the brutal suppression by Chinese military of popular and peaceful demonstrations in a violent and

bloody attack.

Action:

All Government-to-Government sales including weapons sales

suspended. Also commercial exports of weapons.

Visits between military leaders suspended (including planned

visits by Chinese Defence Minister and Commander of Chinese Navy).

Many other routine military contacts also cancelled.

Sympathetic review of requests by Chinese students in the US to extend their stay.

Humanitarian and medical assistance through Red Cross offered to

those injured.

Review of other aspects of bilateral relations under

consideration.

Thailand

Government expressed regret at events, but declined to condemn the

actions of the Chinese authorities on the ground that it was China's

internal affair. Spokesman said future Thai investment in China

might be halted for some time. Popular Thai reaction stronger.
