Shanghai students set up road blocks in eastern and western parts of central Shanghai, accused of destroying buses, making agitating speeches, blocking traffic and preventing workers from going to work. Shanghai Municipal Government spokesman says Peking governments "decisive measures to subdue counter-revolutionary riots" in Peking "have our resolute support" (Shanghai Radio 4.6.89).
Peking Mayor Chen Xitong issues statement on events of 4 June, says more than 1,000 PLA personnel were killed or injured (Peking radio 6.6.89).
Hong Kong Ming Pao reports that Li Peng was shot and wounded in the leg by a young People's Armed Police officer in Great Hall of People.
Military presence remains heavy. Tanks make circuits of the city. Soldiers continue to fire indiscriminately into streets. Protesters re-erect barricades on Changan avenue and use buses to block roads near Tiananmen Square (Financial Times 5.6.89).
Reports that troops are heading for the university area of Peking.
CCP Central Committee and State Council issue letter on situation in Peking blaming ex-prisoners, hooligans, remnants of the gang of four and the "social dregs" for the "horrifying counter-revolutionary riot" on 3 June. Say some casualties occurred, "but without acting in this way, it would have been impossible to subdue the riots, more and more bloodshed would have occurred." (Peking radio 5.6.89)
Hong Kong Ming Pao claims that Deng Xiaoping is seriously ill in hospital.
