Peking Autonomous Student Association submits plan for dialogue to government. Sets deadline for reply by 12 noon 3 May. Threatens further demonstration on 4 May if their call for dialogue is not met.

Zhao Ziyang addresses commemorative meeting and urges stability. He warns "a country of promise will be turned into a country of hopelessness and turbulence." Yang Shangkun, Li Peng, Wan Li, Qiao Shi, Hu Qili and Yao Yilin also attended (Xinhua 3.5.89). conference on student unrest given by State Council spokesman Yuan Mu. He Dongchang, Vice-Minister of State Education Commission, and members of Peking party committee also present. (Peking Television 3.5.89).

Zhao Ziyang tells visiting governors of the Asian Development Bank, at a meeting in Peking, that he was confident that there would be "no big riots and the demonstrations will gradually calm down.' He says the recent student demonstrations did not indicate political instability: "the demonstrators merely wanted to correct errors in the party and government work. The reasonable demands of the students should be met through democratic and legal means." (Xinhua 5.5.89).
