STATEMENT ON DEVELOPMENTS IN CHINA
We have been following developments in China with the
closest possible attention. We have called on all concerned to show moderation and restraint and hope that
the situation can be resolved peacefully.
It is understandable that people in Hong Kong should feel
great concern about events in China. We understand how
highly they value the freedoms which they currently enjoy.
This emphasises the importance of the Joint Declaration,
which provides for these freedoms to continue in Hong
Kong after 1997. The Government remain fully committed
to working for the full and faithful implementation of
that Agreement. It remains very much in China's long
term interest to make the Agreement work and to see Hong
Kong remaining stable and prosperous.
