STATEMENT ON EVENTS IN CHINA

With your permission Mr Speaker I should like to make

a statement about the tragic events in Peking over the

weekend.

As my

I am sure that all members of the House who have

watched the harrowing scenes on television of civilians

being gunned down by the Chinese armed forces will share

the Government's deep sense of shock and outrage.

Right Honourable Friend the Prime Minister said in her

statement on 4 June, we are all deeply shocked by the

news from Peking and appalled by the indiscriminate

shooting of unarmed people.

It is clear from reactions here in Britain and abroad

that international opinion is united in condemning the

Chinese authorities for their recourse to senseless

violence. Elsewhere in the Communist world, governments

are beginning to recognise that confrontation and
