20. EMBASSY NOT DOING ENOUGH TO HELP HONG KONG PEOPLE IN PEKING

-

Embassy doing everything possible to look after and advise all

British and Hong Kong people without discrimination. Have been

keeping in close touch with Hong Kong Government.

Hong Kong people have received exactly the same advice from the

Embassy as any other British national. But under present circumstances there are severe restraints on Embassy's ability to

assist.

21. WAS A HONG KONG TV CREW TURNED AWAY BY EMBASSY IN PEKING?

-

Advice given to all people in "Beijing Hotel" after night of 3 June was that they should stay there for own safety.

Some Hong Kong journalists suggested transport be sent to collect them. At time of request, that was impossible. Embassy subject to same constraints under martial law as everyone else. Embassy vehicles do not have safe passage.

TV crew would have been advised to stay put. Would not have been told that Embassy would not accept them into Embassy.
