Dear Ms Abbott Walt,
CONSERVATION IN THE DEPENDENT TERRITORIES: "FRAGMENTS OF PARADISE"
-) (87)
I note from Jill Hanna's letter of 3 December that you are coordinating the Whitehall response to "Fragments of Paradise".
2. My own particular responsibility is for the South Atlantic islands of St Helena and Tristan Da Cunha. If there are any particular points concerning them on which you would like ODA help, please do not hesitate to contact me or Joan Hooton (213-6687).
3. In the meantime, and in order to put into context the comments in the first paragraph on page 32, you may like to have the enclosed copy of our letter of 19 February 1986 to Dr Quentin Cronk of Cambridge University. We cannot accept that this letter supports the accusation in the book that this Department has shown "a lack of awareness or responsiveness to conservation issues". In fact, quite the opposite is true: the subsequent report which Dr Cronk kindly copied to us congratulated the ODA (and others) for its efforts in flora conservation and pointed to the St Helena programme as "one of the most significant and successful plant conservation initiatives. ever". A pity perhaps that this quotation also was not included in
the book!
