Dear Miss Albert. In ott,
Action Taken
CONSERVATION IN THE DEPENDENT TERRITORIES
'FRAGMENTS OF PARADISE'
Please refer to your letter of 27 November 1987 addressed to Mr G O Whittaker on the above subject. I am sorry it has taken so long to send a response but our papers had been unfortunately mislaid and have just come to light.
The recommendations contained in the booklet entitled "Fragments of Paradise", both general and those specific to St Helena, would seem to be quite unexceptional and should in our view be accepted.
In the meantime you may be interested to know that certain efforts are I enclose being made here to preserve the fauna and flora of St Helena. for your information a copy of a letter, sent to Mrs Sara Oldfield by our Agricultural and Forestry officer, which is self-explanatory.
Efforts are also being made for conservation through the medium of the Education Department and one of the things initiated by that department is the production of the joint local publication by the abovementioned departments of 'THE ENDEMIC FLORA OF ST HELENA - A Struggle for Survival'. The study of local flora and fauna will also form part of the curriculum of the Prince Andrew School which is due to be opened this year.
Endemic Plants have been used in the Landscaping of the school, in order that pupils, as well as adults, become familiar with them.
Yours sevenly,
E C Brooks
Government Secretary
