chemical products.

The Shenzhen officials admitted that the SSEZ's

industrial base was not so comprehensive as that in the established industrial centres like Shanghai and its

industries were basically of the assembly type. But by comparison with those in the rest of the Pearl River Delta, industries in Shenzhen were at the higher end in respect of both the products and the production processes. Enterprises in the SSEZ were reported to be trying to develop a greater variety of light industries,

particularly

high technology industries which were also

labour intensive, e.g. computers and

printed circuit boards; and

industries complementary to those in Hong

Kong.

The

The visiting team was told that the Industry

Office of the Shenzhen Municipal Government was

responsible for Shenzhen's industrial development.

Industry Office was now being merged with the Trade Office

and the Inward Investment Office to form the Economic

Development Council of the Shenzhen Municipal Government.

Besides discussing industrial development with

Shenzhen officials, the team also visited the Shenzhen

Industrial Exhibition Hall and Huafa Electronic Co. Ltd.,

details of which are reported in Annex IV and V

respectively.
