Bi-lateral trade balance for indirect trade between China

and Taiwan via Hong Kong

Insofar as indirect trade via Hong Kong is

concerned, since 1980 Taiwan has consistently run a surplus with China. In 1988 this trade surplus grew rapidly to HK$13.8 billion, almost double that recorded in

1987.

This refers only to the indirect trade balance between China and Taiwan via Hong Kong. Direct trade between China and Taiwan (though not allowed by the Taiwan authorities it is widely believed to be taking place, although on a limited scale) and indirect trade via places other than Hong Kong are not included in this trade balance. So the overall trade balance between China and Taiwan may differ significantly from the figures shown here.
