played out, not as Deng would prefer in a blaze of internal as well as external succes, but in a period of retrenchment and discomfort with uncertainties over the future line. In these circumstances we may see the present uneasy coalition continue for some time but with Deng's age and volatility (which may partly explain his absence from the opening NPC session) an increasingly unsettling factor.
