Spatial relation of Guangdong to Hong Kong

The spatial concepts of a "metropolitan-fringe relationship" and a "port-hinterland relationship" can be used to describe economic relations between Hong Kong and Guangdong generally and the Pearl River Delta region together with the Shenzhen and Zhuhai Special Economic

In respect of manufacturing activities, Guangdong performs a supportive role through outward processing and compensation trade arrangements, by which some relatively more labour intensive and space intensive processes are carried out in Guangdong, taking advantage. of the lower wage rates and cheaper land than are available in Hong Kong. Hong Kong can thus concentrate on those products or processes which involve a higher level of skill and which require the workforce to be more sophisticated and better trained. Apart from manufacturing, the river, rail and road transport links in Guangdong provide feeder services by which foodstuffs and other consumer goods are brought in to meet Hong Kong's everyday needs.
