Takes prime responsibility for administration of Governor's
visits and BL-related meetings. Appears to have no policy
function. Married to a Scandinavian expert at the
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and has served in
Scandinavian countries. Hopes to be posted back to
Sweden.
A Shanghainese with an idiosyncratic, almost surreal sense
of humour who speaks good, often idiomatic, English and
Danish and likes Western classical music.
WANG WENQUAN

Appointed to the HKMAO in February 1989. Previously served
in Tibet (as an interpreter), Somalia (with Lin Zhiying),
Ethiopia and as a linguistic expert at the UN in Geneva.
A big, round-faced Shanghainese with an open, friendly
manner and pleasant sense of humour: but has not given
much sign so far of depth or independence. Speaks good
English.
Mme HE WEI
), SECOND SECRETARY
A quiet, nervous woman with reasonable, but limited English.
Seems to deal only with fairly low level administration.
LI YIJIAN

), STAFF MEMBER
A friendly man who appears slightly reserved, but this is
probably due to a (not altogether justified) lack of
confidence in his English. Legally trained and older than
the other "youngsters" (mid/late thirties) he seems
be the Division's dogsbody.
