He particularly stressed that the leadership was well aware that the process of price reform would be difficult. Price reform, he said, "could be the most difficult task to be dealt with for all the socialist countries amid their reforms. We are ready to have a try, despite the risks.

32. On Friday 3 June, the group met by special arrangement with Senior Leader Deng Xiaoping for one and a half hours. Deng Xiaoping made an extensive statement reviewing the history of Chinese development efforts - successes and failures over the past forty years. He then commented on the main issues which had been raised during the four day meeting, on which he had evidently been regularly and fully briefed.

He explained that price reform was essential to create a sound base for the longer term future of China, and that China was now strong enough to face the pain and problems which would undoubtedly arise. He also emphasised the important role which foreign investment is expected to play in modernisation.

34. He then addressed the issue of the future of Hong Kong in relation to the development strategy for China a whole. He reaffirmed that Hong Kong's systems will be kept in place for 50 years after China takes over in 1997, and stressed that "China may be poor, but it keeps its word."

35. He thanked the participants for their suggestions: "All of you have given China help. We have heard many useful opinions which will play a good part in the government's drawing up policies.

A number of other events were arranged during the visit, allowing the foreign guests to meet informally with a number of eminent Chinese personalities. In this way, it was possible to inform a larger group of Chinese and the international community in Beijing, about the purposes and the outcome of the meeting.
